INTRO

  • Have you ever wondered how strong, the well known correlation is, between height and body length and whether there is a relationship in something less obvious such as length of muzzle and hock?
  • Are there really such big diferences in Beagles from diferent parts of the world. And what happens when you breed them together?
  • How do puppies grow and do all our puppies grow the same?
Beagle Somatometry (=body measuring) is a unique project ran also as a diploma thesis under the Czech University of Life Sciences.
Our goal is to describe the Beagle anatomy in numbers by using statistical methods, to determine whether there are statistical differences between Beagles bred in different parts of the world. What and how strong is the correlation between specific bodyparts and how can colour cause optical ilusions.
The second part of this thesis compares growth of puppies (measured preferably at the age of 6 1/2 weeks - Jean Dills system of evaluating puppies) with their own measurments at adulthood

My hopes are such, that our results will  serve as a guide to other breeders and enthusiastic people who are just starting with our breed or anyone who is interested to find out more!

Please do send us your Beagles' measurements. It will not take you longer than several minutes during your weekly grooming routine!

About the author:
Alice Cancikova has been involved in showing and breeding Beagles for over 14 years.
A hobby in travelling gave her the opportunity to become familiar with Beagles from different parts of the world. Together with the University of Life Sciences in Prague she is the author of this thesis that will hopefully answer several questions often heard in the Beagle community.
